The Hornworms Came Before the Storm. By Dawn, the Hayes Farm Would Reveal Who Had Been Poisoning the Valley for Years.
The first hornworm Samuel Hayes crushed beneath his boot made a soft sound.
The thousandth one made no sound at all.
By then, the tobacco field was already dying.
Samuel stood beneath a merciless afternoon sun with sweat darkening the back of his brown work shirt, staring over twenty acres that had been green and valuable only the day before. Now the leaves looked as if an invisible army had marched through them overnight.
Ragged holes.
Bare stems.
Half-eaten plants.
And everywhere he looked, fat green caterpillars clung beneath the leaves, chewing with patient, relentless hunger.
Samuel turned over another leaf.
Three hornworms.
He checked the next.
Five.
A few yards farther down the row, an entire plant had been stripped almost naked.
His chest tightened.
“Hornworms.”
The word came out quieter than he intended.
Behind him, the barn door slammed.
Ellen came running.
Her faded gray-blue dress brushed against the tobacco leaves as she hurried through the rows, one hand holding up her apron so she would not trip.
“How bad?”
Samuel pulled down another leaf.
Two enormous caterpillars curled beneath it.
He looked across the field.

“Millions.”
Ellen stared at him.
Samuel rubbed a hand across his face.
“Not literally. But look at them.”
She did.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Their entire winter stood around them.
The bank payment. Coal. Seed for spring. Medicine. Flour. Lamp oil. Everything depended on those leaves reaching market.
If the crop disappeared, they would not merely lose money.
They could lose the farm.
Ellen stepped closer to one of the plants.
Unlike Samuel, she did not immediately touch the worms.
She studied them.
One crawled slowly along a stem, its body bright green against the darker leaf.
Another clung beneath a vein.
Ellen’s face tightened.
“Keep pulling the worst leaves.”
Samuel looked at her.
“What?”
“Anything already destroyed. Pull it and pile it away from the healthy plants.”
“Ellen, there are thousands.”
“Then start with the worst.”
“Where are you going?”
She was already walking toward the yard.
“To make them regret coming here.”

The iron cauldron belonged to Ellen’s mother.
It was black with age, dented along one side, and heavy enough that Samuel had complained about moving it when they married.
Ellen had refused to throw it away.
“My mother cooked everything in this,” she had told him.
Samuel had laughed.
“Everything?”
“Soup. Soap. Remedies. Probably arguments.”
Now the old cauldron sat over a furious fire behind the house.
Ellen worked quickly.
Hot peppers.
Bitter root.
Water.
A carefully measured amount of lye solution.
Samuel came from the field carrying an armful of ruined leaves.
He stopped when he smelled the mixture.
“That could strip paint.”
“Only if I make it stronger.”
“You’re putting it on the tobacco?”
“My mother used it on garden worms.”
“This isn’t a garden.”
“No.”
Ellen stirred.
“This is our mortgage.”
Samuel almost smiled.
Almost.

She strained the dark liquid through cloth and poured it into their brass backpack sprayer.
“Strap this on.”
He did.
Ellen tightened the leather straps herself.
“Pump continuously.”
“How much?”
“All of it.”
Samuel looked toward the enormous field.
“You made enough for maybe six rows.”
“Then come back.”
He kissed her forehead.
“You’re terrifying.”
“My mother said the same thing about me.”
Samuel walked back into the tobacco.
Pump.
Spray.
Step.
Pump.
Spray.
Step.
The mist covered the leaves in a fine sheen.
At first nothing happened.
Then one hornworm twisted.
Another released its grip.
A third dropped into the dirt.

Samuel stared.
“Ellen!”
She emerged from the yard carrying another bucket.
“What?”
“It works!”
More worms began falling.
By late afternoon, the earth between the rows was dotted with green bodies.
Some still moved.
Others curled tightly.
The chewing slowed.
Then stopped.
For the first time since morning, Samuel allowed himself to breathe.
The plants were damaged.
Some badly.
But much of the crop still stood.
They had not saved the harvest yet—but they had saved the possibility of a harvest.
Ellen stood near the barn doorway, watching Samuel spray the last section.
That was when she noticed the tracks.
Two narrow wheel ruts crossed the hard ground near the north fence.
They were fresh.
Very fresh.
Ellen walked toward them.
One track was ordinary.
The other was not.
Every few feet, a narrow gouge cut into the dirt beside the wheel impression.

Damaged rim.
She followed the tracks toward the gate.
Samuel returned with the empty sprayer.
Ellen pointed.
“Who came here last night?”
“Nobody.”
“Someone did.”
He crouched beside the tracks.
“These weren’t here yesterday.”
“No.”
They followed them along the fence.
Near one post, Ellen spotted something pale beneath a weed.
A cork.
Ten feet farther, a splintered wooden box lay partly hidden beneath tobacco leaves.
She picked it up.
Inside were several dried leaves.
And tiny pale-green spheres.
Samuel frowned.
“What are those?”
Ellen touched one with the tip of her finger.
“Eggs.”
His face changed.
He had seen enough hornworms that day to understand.
“You mean—”
“Yes.”

Samuel looked back toward the ravaged field.
“They were brought here.”
Ellen said nothing.
Suddenly the infestation no longer felt like bad luck.
It felt like a message.
The wheel track bothered Ellen more than the eggs.
She had seen it before.
Two days earlier, a polished black carriage had rolled into their yard shortly before noon.
Its owner had worn a dark coat despite the heat.
Amos Bell.
The largest tobacco buyer in three counties.
Bell had stood beneath their oak tree and removed his hat as though visiting friends.
He had offered Samuel an advance contract for the entire crop.
Cash immediately.
Guaranteed purchase.
Half the normal market price.
Samuel had laughed.
Bell had not.
“Markets change,” he said.
“So do bad offers,” Samuel replied.
Bell smiled thinly.
“Prices may look different by harvest.”
Then he climbed into his carriage and left.
As Ellen watched the damaged wheel track now, she remembered the faint scraping sound Bell’s carriage had made.
A metal rim.

Bent inward.
Samuel saw the realization in her face.
“Bell?”
“I saw that wheel.”
“You’re certain?”
“Yes.”
He stood.
“Then we’re going to town.”
They saddled both horses.
Before leaving, Ellen glanced once more across the field.
Thousands of dead and dying caterpillars lay beneath the plants.
The sky above the western ridge had darkened.
Storm clouds.
She barely noticed them.
That mistake would haunt her before the night was over.
Bell’s warehouse occupied the end of Market Street beside the rail loading platform.
By the time Samuel and Ellen reached town, most stores had closed.
The warehouse doors were shut.
No lamps burned inside.
But behind the building stood Amos Bell’s carriage.
Samuel dismounted.
He walked directly to the rear wheel.
Bent rim.
Narrow edge.
Fresh mud packed around the metal.

He looked at Ellen.
“Same.”
Ellen’s stomach turned.
Samuel reached for the warehouse door.
She grabbed his arm.
“Not yet.”
“He poisoned our field.”
“If he did.”
